How AI is Transforming the World of Design

Unless you’ve been living off the grid, chances are you’ve been bombarded with news of AI taking over life as we know it. While AI or Artificial Intelligence has been around for decades, only recently has it trickled down into couch conversations.

What is it that makes the world of AI so exciting and so terrifying all of a sudden? It’s the idea of limitless potential, endless opportunities and the sheer exhilaration of being able to fly before you walk. Anyone with a vision, an idea or even a mere thought can create magic at the click of a mouse—well it’s a bit more than that, but you get the drift.

AI is transforming the way we think, create, collaborate and share ideas. It’s no longer just about creating content but also about discovering new ways to express yourself through it. AI has unleashed a wave of fresh dialogue, pushing creatives to dig deeper and go wide. It’s made one thing crystal clear—progress over perfection.

Most designers, myself included, are constantly chasing this elusive notion of perfection. We often forget how important it is to focus on making incremental improvements rather than trying to achieve perfection right out of the gate. Talk about self-imposed perfectionism—this blog took me a week to write…Artificial creativity has made it much easier for designers to take that first step. We can dip our toes, explore, fail and try yet again. Platforms such as Midjourney and DALL-E-2  champion imagination. There isn’t much these engines aren’t able to visualise and produce.

These AI platforms, along with the latest addition from Adobe, Firefly, are transforming the art ecosystem and pushing us to dream big. However, there isn’t really a machine collective. As explained by Midjourney founder David Holz;

Every time you ask the AI to make a picture, it doesn’t really remember or know anything else it’s ever made. It has no will, it has no goals, it has no intention, no storytelling ability. All the ego and will and stories—that’s us. It’s just like an engine. An engine has nowhere to go, but people have places to go. It’s kind of like a hive mind of people, super-powered with technology.”

At UMM, the Creative Department has been experimenting with AI, utilising various platforms to improve and challenge our output. From ideation sessions to creating moodboards, we’ve been able to harness AI to visualise our concepts, pushing our creativity and inspiring outside-of-the-box thinking. Whether it’s imagining a mountain of fairy bread or Kath and Kim wearing a gaming headset, the ability to put imagery to an idea in the blink of an eye has been a total game changer for the way we work and bring concepts to life. With ever-evolving possibilities, our team is excited to see future potential.

Profound developments in AI have truly changed the game for all content creators. Not going to lie, but like everyone else I went through the entire gamut of emotions, feeling like us designers were done for. Since the beginning of time, Art has been our domain, something we humans take immense pride in, but the age of AI has definitely challenged that. The fear of automation displacing jobs has been around for decades. Humans will always fear change, but there is growth in the uncomfortable, the unknown.

I believe what technology cannot replace is the power of storytelling, emotions and collective intellect. In the absence of human consciousness and shared ideas, the output is hollow. AI is here and we cannot have our blinkers on and pretend it’s going anywhere. It’s here to stay, and we need to do what we humans do best—learn, adapt and improve.
