A “green” surfboard is a total no brainer right? With surfers having long held the rep for being a bit hippie, a bunch of old reef huggers, surely their chosen craft are as at one with the environment as they are? Technological advancements in the surfing industry are moving us ever closer to this elusive green ride.
Australian company and world’s premier distributor of surfboards, Global Surf Industries (GSI), has unveiled The New Surf Project (NSP) Coco Mat board range, built using all natural coconut husk fibers.
The NSP Coco Mat technology is the world’s first and only Patent Pending surfboard construction, built using this abundant and sustainable material. A favourable strength to weight ratio has long been the surfboard manufacture’s Holy Grail, and it is this incredible characteristic that is most impressive of NSP’s coconut husk fiber. The random discontinuous coconut fibers are integrated into the lamination process and through NSP’s exclusive construction method, delivering one of the lightest and strongest collections of surfboards and SUPs in today’s competitive market.
This is one of the most fascinating ideas we have seen. The natural fibers of the coconut are readily available, need minimal processing and come from local, self sustaining crops near the NSP manufacturing facility,” said GSI’s Managing Director Mark Kelly.
A surfboards’ function must always outweigh its form, and the Coco Mat boards provide a responsive, smooth ride with plenty of flex.
