With the summer holidays officially over (sigh) I thought I’d use this opportunity to reflect on what I enjoyed most about my sunny break 2010/2011.
Like the rest of Sydney I marvelled at the opportunity to spend two glorious weeks outside and became obsessed with the ocean, sunscreen, cider and watching as much tennis as possible during the nights (not playing).
For as long as I can remember summer days in Australia have been combined with beach swims and coming home to a great game of tennis. With Federer dominating the tennis world for the past decade, this year begun with neither Nadal nor Federer in the Australian Open final, providing other stars with the chance to shine both on and off the court. And this has put me into a reflection of who are the new studs of tennis for 2011?
Most notably of these athletes gaining attention is the man who won the Australian Open 2011; Novak Djokovic. His cameo appearance in world-renown dj Martin Solveig’s video clip; ‘Hello’ has showed the popularity the tennis stars are having for the antiques off the court as well. The clip appears with two ‘tennis stars’ (Solveig and Bob Sinclair) playing in a tennis tournament. Also appearing from the tennis world is Frenchman is Gael Monfils. Used as much for their celebrity status, this clip at last look, has warranted over 12 million views on You Tube surely adding to Djokovic and Monfil’s already giant fan base.

Djokovic’s long-term girlfriend from Belgrade, Jelena Ristic has also been gaining the stud attention with her darling good looks. Add into this his role in raising money for QLD floods at the Australian Open where the sports star appeared minus one tennis shirt, Djokovic gained as much attention for his second grand slam win as he did for the rugged abs and physique he displayed.
World number 1 Rafael Nadal will join football stars David Beckham and Christiano Ronaldo as the newest face of Armani underwear. Posing with his giant left arm (notably smaller than his right) and as rumours have it, not much else, billboards will appear everywhere of the sporting legend. The black and white advertisements will come as a breathe of fresh air to women worldwide, but also as a shock in what we have come to expect from our charitable tennis stars.
And the United States have found their answer to Posh and Becks in the tennis world. Previously notorious for dating Hollywood starlets, this US tennis pro has long been a favourite of the cameras. Two years ago, tennis pro Andy Roddick married Sports Illustrated model Brooklyn Decker – a media delight for their stunning good looks and kissing in public, the charitable pair gain attention everywhere they go securing their celebrity status beyond the world of tennis.
To add to this, the tennis pro’s wife has now had her first movie role in ‘Just Go with It’ opposite Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler.
So where to next for the stars of tennis? While Federer’s reign as world no 1 seems to be at a halt, tennis stars from nations wide are making the most of the attention they are gaining, and who can blame them!
