Festival of the Sun in Port Macquarie has yet again proven that the smaller Aussie festivals can offer some of the biggest live music moments of your festival year. The UMM team had been counting down the weeks to the festival, and come Friday, had the Combi van packed up and ready for the big weekend away up the coast.
Selling out in record time, UMM were just one of thousands of festival goers who were keen and ready for a weekend of great music, beach and good camping times. Coming from all over the country, it was an awesome mix of people from Sydney, Brisbane, Regional Centres, Melbourne and as far reaching as Perth.
Punters were rolling into the gorgeous Sundowner Breakwall Tourist Park from Thursday night, setting up tents, throwing on boardies, bikinis and filling the esky, which set the scene for the rest of the weekend; a chilled BYO music festival on the beach with lots of laughs, communal hugs and musical bonding.
With too many highlights to mention them all in one blog post, let’s just say it started with a fantastic energy that lasted until the final act on Saturday night.
Friday kicked off with Ebb n Flo, pumping the crowd with their cool reggae vibe, break-dancers and poppers. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings unsurprisingly ruled the stage with a performance that blew everyone away, organisers included. Headlining the night was Regurgitator! The Gurge reminded those of us who loved them in the late 90’s how much we still love them now and those who were too young to know them, found a new band they will be downloading to their mp3 players immediately. They rocked the stage hard, with everyone moshing to the last song and just wanting more.
Saturday was the perfect weather for any festival, and the vibe was just as great. Triple J un-earthed winners The Foreign Objects, proved why they won, with a huge performance to smash out the hang-overs and have the crowd ready for a big final day!
With such a huge line-up here is a quick highlight reel:
Sierra Fin – amazing sound that surprised everyone, a new fav, Slow Down Honey – the young Terrigal Lads had girls up and dancing with their fun alternative poppy tunes, The Chemist – true artists held a captivated crowd with a sound that is theirs alone, The Seabellies – lot’s and lot’s of love beaming from crowd to stage, The Gin Club – Big beautiful anthems that many a boy could sing word for word, passionately and loudly, Dallas Frasca – sooo good, who can choose between Sharon Jones or Dallas for best performance? Calling All Cars – set the mosh pit on fire, That 1 Guy – one to NEVER miss, so cool and out there, British India – Rock and Roll never dies and they rocked, Xavier Rudd – too much talent in one human being, what more can we say.
A year to remember for Festival of the Sun organisers and ticket holders alike; a vibe so good that even the Pit Security Guards were smiling and having fun and once again most bands ditched the backstage to hang with the crowd to watch their peers.
Festival of the Sun is here to stay with its beautiful setting, chilled atmosphere, superb eclectic line-up and their awesome loyal festival goers.
Watch this space for – I know all of us at UMM are!
